L'ORMARINS OU BOSSTOK CHENIN BLANC 2021

Aromas of ripe peach, apricot, nectarine and rich sun-dried pineapple, lightly drizzled with honey – yet restrained. The palate is something of a surprise in its bright, vibrant, tangy succulence – backed by abundant stone fruit flavour as promised on the nose. It is refined with a gentle, delicate creamy brush of oak. Impressive depth and complexity with lovely interplay of fruit, oak and fresh, lively acidity which adds so much lightness and enjoyment. Rounded and long, but remains enticing and light to the end.

Old Vine Project

Old vines are a phenomenon that has captured the attention of the global wine world. Wines that are made from old vines are a tribute to the grower's love of his or her land. They exist because of the people who touched and tended them over many years. In South Africa, producers can certify old vine vineyards and wines with the Old Vine Project (OVP).

South Africa has the advantage that our vineyard plant dates can be verified by the South African Wine Industry Information Systems (SAWIS) back to 1900. This extraordinary database has been instrumental in the existence of the OVP and its guarantee of traceability.

Members of the OVP apply for the Certified Heritage Vineyards seal for wine made from vineyards of 35 years or older, together with the planting date. This is a guarantee to the consumer of authentic wines made according to the OVP viticultural and winemaking guidelines.

The journey to document South Africa’s old vines was started in 2002 by vineyard manager, Rosa Kruger. The OVP was formalised in 2016 with seed funding from the Rupert Foundation. Today, with traction gained and awareness spreading, more wines are being launched to augment the OVP's footprint.

A mesmerising stream of fine bubbles can be found in the glass. Bold maritime breeze, brine and salt-laden sea air whiffs on the nose. Cream cracker and lemon zest too. The palate offers up big tangy citrus flavours with vibrant zest immediately noticeable. Clean, fresh and vital. A richer, creamier biscuit and lees element then comes to the fore, indicative of the complexity, refinement and layers of flavour. Harmonious, statuesque and beautifully structured, this wine has fantastic length and presence on the palate. Long farewell with a distinct lime marmalade on toast note.

Quince, poached peach and a whiff of vanilla on the nose. The palate is fresh, offering up the peach and quince fruitiness but with a lovely lime tang and vibrance. All of that is offset against a gentle background of creamy oak – which is subtly but beautifully integrated with charming vanilla and butterscotch notes. Textured and long, nothing Is overplayed with impressive harmony, palate weight and genuine refinement. Rewarding aftertaste.

Bright pale yellow with a green tinge. Clean and refreshing aromas of grapefruit, lemon rind and lime on the nose, with enticing hints of pear, fennel and green pepper. The palate is delicate and refined, with flavours of grapefruit, lime and cucumber elegantly supported by a lively, mineral acidity and creamy texture. Distinct salinity and dry citrus pith flavours linger in a long, lip smacking tail. A complex, focused and precise wine which although already delightful, will reward with careful cellaring and age with distinction.

Picture of CAPE OF GOOD HOPE SNEEUWKRANS PINOT NOIR 2019
Sneeuwkrans Pinot noir presents with a perfumed floral nose, cherry blossom, ripe plum and raspberry aromatics. In typical Pinot Noir character, it displays approachability with complexity and subtle nuance, while remaining succulent and generous. There is a guile and mystery to this wine. Broad and laidback on entry, it offers bright red fruits but then also subtler, earthy, deep forest floor intensity. Silky, refined and pliable, with a powerful core and backbone from integrated oak. Poised and long rewarding.
