DIE OU BOSSTOK CHENIN BLANC 2025

A fruit salad bouquet of peach, apricot with fruit blossom perfume and honey with a sprinkling of spice. The palate displays that same generosity – with ample peach, nectarine and loquat to be found, alongside rich marzipan and honeyed notes and even a taste of creamy chamomile. Ripe, rounded, broad and mouth filling, it doesn’t become too full or bold since a bright line of acid keeps it fresh, lively and vibrant. A well balanced, full-flavoured but nuanced and composed mouthful with texture and length in spades. Thrilling.

Old Vine Project

Old vines are a phenomenon that has captured the attention of the global wine world. Wines that are made from old vines are a tribute to the grower's love of his or her land. They exist because of the people who touched and tended them over many years. In South Africa, producers can certify old vine vineyards and wines with the Old Vine Project (OVP).

South Africa has the advantage that our vineyard plant dates can be verified by the South African Wine Industry Information Systems (SAWIS) back to 1900. This extraordinary database has been instrumental in the existence of the OVP and its guarantee of traceability.

Members of the OVP apply for the Certified Heritage Vineyards seal for wine made from vineyards of 35 years or older, together with the planting date. This is a guarantee to the consumer of authentic wines made according to the OVP viticultural and winemaking guidelines.

The journey to document South Africa’s old vines was started in 2002 by vineyard manager, Rosa Kruger. The OVP was formalised in 2016 with seed funding from the Rupert Foundation. Today, with traction gained and awareness spreading, more wines are being launched to augment the OVP's footprint.

Delicate raspberry and red cherry aromas with earthy, forest floor and gentle spice notes. That same sprightly lightness is found in the mouth: gentle, juicy and delicately spicy on entry – with cherry, plum and raspberry vibrance. Bright, fresh and vigorous with some more intense earthy, forest floor and leafy nuances which lend dimension and depth. It is seamless, supple and pliable with an ethereality that is enticing – but there is backbone and power too. Effortlessly integrated, it is focussed but impressively long on the finish and delivers heaps of flavour and interest.

Tendrils of spice add nuance and allure to a nose packed with black berries, hedgerow fruit and some mocha notes. The palate is plush, rounded and pillowy but layered with dark fruitcake flavour, black cherry, baking spice and pencil shavings too. The mouthfeel is complemented by its overall stature and regal refinement. Balanced with seamless integration of oak and ripe, rich fruit with lovely succulence and freshness as well. Complex, supple and silky smooth, the wine is ultimately simply delicious with a superbly long tail.

A forthcoming and delicately seductive nose reveals a delightful interplay of sweet, ripe cherry and blueberry aromas. A subtle hint of rose petals and a whisper of shy spice further enhance its allure. On the palate, the wine opens with a succulent and fresh entry, but it quickly transforms into something far more intriguing than the nose suggests. It defies expectations of lightness or overt fruitiness, instead presenting a sleek, sinewy, and powerful profile with a lithe muscularity. The fruit profile deepens into darker tones—black cherry, plum, and even prune—accentuated by a prominent liquorice note. The wine boasts impressive density and layered depth. Tannins provide structure and stature, but they remain refined and unobtrusive. Altogether, this is a cohesive, rewarding, and thoroughly delicious wine, leaving a lingering and satisfying finish.

A subtle trace of violets and graphite underpins the bolder aromas of blue and black fruit. Similarly, on the palate a subtle spice element tempers the ripe, rich, rounded and juicy mouthful. A cocoa powder nuance lends the overall palate a Black Forest gateaux vibe because of the black cherry vibrance. Elegant, cohesive and structured with the oak supporting the fruit beautifully. Lovely leashed power and restraint followed by a long tail.
