CAPE OF GOOD HOPE VAN LILL CHENIN BLANC 2020

Typical stone fruit of peach and nectarine, a light hint of citrus zest and gentle floral perfume on the nose. Bright, tangy vivacity on the palate which offsets the ripe, fleshy yet succulent stone fruit flavours. Rounded and rich but focussed yet precise courtesy of the acidity. The palate is harmonious and integrated with subtle oak creaminess. The finish is elegant and textured with a long, weighty aftertaste.

Old Vine Project

Old vines are a phenomenon that has captured the attention of the global wine world. Wines that are made from old vines are a tribute to the grower's love of his or her land. They exist because of the people who touched and tended them over many years. In South Africa, producers can certify old vine vineyards and wines with the Old Vine Project (OVP).

South Africa has the advantage that our vineyard plant dates can be verified by the South African Wine Industry Information Systems (SAWIS) back to 1900. This extraordinary database has been instrumental in the existence of the OVP and its guarantee of traceability.

Members of the OVP apply for the Certified Heritage Vineyards seal for wine made from vineyards of 35 years or older, together with the planting date. This is a guarantee to the consumer of authentic wines made according to the OVP viticultural and winemaking guidelines.

The journey to document South Africa’s old vines was started in 2002 by vineyard manager, Rosa Kruger. The OVP was formalised in 2016 with seed funding from the Rupert Foundation. Today, with traction gained and awareness spreading, more wines are being launched to augment the OVP's footprint.

Seductive meaty black fruit aromas with traces of white pepper and a shy hint of smoke. Appealing sour plum, black cherry and soy sauce flavour makes for a deliciously savoury mouthful. A toned, sculpted frame of well-knit oak balances bright spice and succulence. The palate is plush and silky while also demonstrating leashed power and presence. Beautifully restrained and statuesque with a darkly delicious aftertaste.

Picture of CAPE OF GOOD HOPE SNEEUWKRANS PINOT NOIR 2019
Sneeuwkrans Pinot noir presents with a perfumed floral nose, cherry blossom, ripe plum and raspberry aromatics. In typical Pinot Noir character, it displays approachability with complexity and subtle nuance, while remaining succulent and generous. There is a guile and mystery to this wine. Broad and laidback on entry, it offers bright red fruits but then also subtler, earthy, deep forest floor intensity. Silky, refined and pliable, with a powerful core and backbone from integrated oak. Poised and long rewarding.

Bold but refined nose of orange marmalade on freshly buttered toast. Complex and tempting. Rounded, ripe, full-bodied and creamy, the palate is elegance personified. The first impression is of kumquat or orange marmalade complemented by sumptuous vanilla. This wine presents a textured mouthful which is serious, refined, poised and rich. The restraint in both oaking and fruit ripeness is impressive and delivers great overall harmony. Delightfully long finish which lingers long after the wine is gone.

Appealing mélange of strawberry, raspberry and youngberry on the nose. Vivacious, bright and juicy, with those same berry fruits also found in the mouth. Lovely freshness and succulence from lively acidity, superbly balanced by body and breadth. The wine finishes on a light yet firm chalky grip coupled with good dimension and concentration. Lovely dry tail and resolved finish.
